Lakers, Lady Lakers fall in home opener

The Russell County Laker and Lady Laker basketball teams suffered defeat at the hands of Greenwood Tuesday night in both teams’ home opener.

The Lady Lakers played first and kept it close with the Lady Gators throughout as the game was tied at 36 going into the 4th quarter.

However, Greenwood gained the advantage in the final minutes and was able to come away with a 56-48 win, dropping the Lady Lakers to 1-3 to start the season as the Lady Gators improved to 4-0.

Maleah Preston led the scoring for the Lady Lakers with 13 points, along with a team-high 9 rebounds. Hannah Yates scored 11 points to go along with 7 rebounds, and Aniyah Coffey and Karley Luttrell each added 10 points.

Jaterria Coffey finished with a team-high 5 assists on the night, along with a team-high three steals.

The Lakers lost by 25 to the Gators with a final score of 76-51 as the Lakers fall to 0-3 on the season and the Gators move to 4-0.

The Lakers were able to keep the game close early on, as it was 17-9 after the first quarter, but the Gators were able to build their lead to 15 going into the halftime break, where they were able to extend the lead in the second half by outscoring the Lakers 21-13 in the 3rd quarter.

Mayes Gosser led the scoring for the Lakers with 24 points on 12/16 shooting from the floor on the night to go along with a team-high 9 rebounds.

Trace Stringer scored 9 points and Owen Loy added 6.

The Lady Lakers and Lakers will look to turn things around on Friday as both teams host Warren East in the Kentucky 2A Championship Sectional Tournament.

The Warren East Raiders come in at 2-2 while the Lady Raiders enter at 2-4.
