Bill would allow “caught on camera” traffic tickets

A bill that was pre-filed in the state legislature this week would allow the transportation cabinet to install traffic cameras that could capture drivers breaking traffic laws and bill the owner of the car for the violation.

The bill, which can be read in its entirety here, was pre-filed by Sen. Reggie Thomas of Lexington and is expected to be discussed in the upcoming legislative session in January.

In the original language of the bill, a ticket would be up to $50 and most of the money would go to the local government where the ticket happened.

Neighboring states like Tennessee and Ohio have similar systems in place.
