SCC and LWC Honors programs announce new partnership

Honors students at Somerset Community College (SCC) are now able to seamlessly transfer to the R.V. Bennet Honors Program at Lindsey Wilson College (LWC) under a new agreement signed by Dr. Clint Hayes, senior vice president of Academic Affairs at Somerset Community College, and Dr. Patricia Parrish, vice president for Academic Affairs at Lindsey Wilson College.

LWC and SCC have been strong partners for many years. Lindsey Wilson provides 4-year degree options to students in the SCC service area through the University Center of Southern Kentucky. The new agreement, specifically for honors students, adds to the long list of opportunities for students to enjoy the benefits of both institutions and attests to the spirit of collaboration and commitment to student success that are fundamental to both colleges’ mission.

Under the agreement, students who earn an associate degree and complete requirements of the SCC Honors Program may continue as honors students at LWC in the R.V. Bennett Honors program.
Both programs provide the unique opportunity for students to work closely with mentors in their chosen area of study and craft unique projects each semester that give them greater insight into their future careers. Honors students also enjoy unique enrichment opportunities and the chance to meet with fellow honors students across the state of Kentucky.

Dr. Elizabeth Tapscott, director of the Bennett Honors Program at Lindsey Wilson College, said, “Honors is about scholarly collaboration in and out of the classroom, and this agreement between the Honors programs of SCC and LWC is a prime example of that kind of partnership. The motto of the R.V. Bennett Honors Program is Sapere Aude, ‘dare to know’, and we are excited that students from Somerset’s Honors Program who continue their studies at Lindsey can now come dare with us.”

Regarding the significance of this opportunity, Dr. Amanda Waterstrat, director of the SCC Honors Program and Lindsey Wilson alumnus said, “Community college graduates have countless opportunities available to them through rich transfer partnerships. At SCC, we love building pathways that serve our students while they’re here and support their success in the next stage of their educational journey. This unique opportunity between our honors programs allows our students to excel as honors scholars at SCC and carry that scholarly excellence forward with confidence as honors students at LWC. I can’t wait to see the great things they will do!”

Although space in the program is limited, interested students can learn more about the honors program and apply online at https://somerset.kctcs.edu/admissions/honors-program/index.aspx.
