The Russell County Lady Lakers and Laker Boys both closed out their 2021 basketball seasons Thursday night with wins.
The Lady Lakers went on the road to Whitley City and defeated McCreary County 62 to 45. Star Marcum had a big night for Russell County, finishing with 26 points. Juliah Bault had 15 and Hannah Yates had 9 for Coach Brett Blankenship’s team which is now 14 and 10 and on the year.
The Laker boys hosted Glasgow at Laker gym. The Lakers led by 11 at halftime, by 12 at the end of the third quarter, and led by 14 several times before Glasgow made a run and cut the Laker lead to one, 52 to 51. The Lakers then got a layup by Scott Hamm with :30 seconds remaining and a couple of free throws late to seal the victory, 58 to 53. Russell County was led by Junior forward Jay Milburn who had a superb game, finishing with 19 points, 17 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots. Hamm had 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Owen Loy had 11 for the Lakers. Coach Billy Carson’s team is now 13-13 on the season.
Both teams will be in action next week in the 16th District tournament at Cumberland County. The Laker boys will take on Metcalfe County at 6 o’clock Monday, and the Lady Lakers will play Cumberland County on Tuesday night at 6 pm.
