Russell County man dead from self-inflicted gunshot following 10-hour standoff

An incident on New Year’s Eve left a Russell County man deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside following a 10-hour standoff with law enforcement.

Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston said Russell County deputies Corey Meyer, Kenny Perkins, and Ron Golden responded to a residence at 326 Country View Road off Bernard Ridge Thursday afternoon where they encountered Eric Kellogg. Polston said that when deputies arrived, Kellogg was pointing a rifle at deputies from inside the residence and acting erratically.

Kentucky State Police troopers arrived on scene and the standoff between Kellogg and law enforcement lasted for nearly 10 hours, Polston said. Kellogg reportedly fired shots from the residence at law enforcement, but no officers were injured and Polston said no shots were fired in return from law enforcement.

Numerous attempts were made to contact the individual by PA Speaker by Law Enforcement and a family member to come outside and talk to Sheriffs Deputies and Troopers from the Kentucky State Police to no avail, Polston told WJRS News.

The Kentucky State Police Special Response Team arrived on scene and made entry into the residence, where Kellogg was discovered with a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. The case is still under investigation by the Kentucky State Police and the Russell County Sheriffs Office. Assisting the Kentucky State Police and the Sheriffs Office were Russell Springs Police Officers, Lucas Justice, Hayden Phillips, Russell County EMS, Russell County Coroners Office, and Russell County Attorney’s Office.
