Unemployment Rates Continue to Rise

In what is no surprise to anyone, unemployment rates rose in all 120 Kentucky counties between May 2019 and May 2020, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

In the Lake Cumberland area, Russell County continues to lead the entire area with an unemployment rate for the month of May at 13.9%, followed closely by Metcalfe County at 12.9%, Taylor at 11.6%, and Adair County at 10.8% unemployment.

Russell County’s unemployment rate was 20.4% in April, while Metcalfe County stood at 20.5%, and Taylor at 18.3%. While all counties in the area showed a significant improvement in unemployment rates from April to May, unemployment remains very high as compared to one year ago when all counties in the area were at less than 5.5% unemployment rates.
