Primary Election Results May Not Be Known for Several Days

Primary Election Day is now over, but the official final results may not be known for days.   Polls closed last night at6 o’clock in maybe the most unusual and different election in modern times due to COVID-19.    The Russell County Clerk’s office says it will be next week before final results from the county are made public.   Deputy Clerk Ruth Hill told WJRS News on Monday more than 3,000 absentee ballots had been requested and those returned had to be counted.   The clerk’s office said it would not release any results, not even the machine absentee totals or the walk-in totals from yesterday.

Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams said last night all counties had until 6

Meanwhile, county clerk’s offices in neighboring Adair, Wayne, McCreary, Taylor and Pulaski completed all of their results last evening,

In the race for State Representative in the 83rd district, in Pulaski County, Mark Polston narrowly carried his home county, receiving 1247 votes to Josh Branscum’s 1034, giving Polston a very slight edge of 213 votes.

WJRS NEWS will continue to be in contact with county clerk’s in the area and will report on any official results as soon as they are released from any county clerk

In other election news from yesterday, United States Senator Mitch McConnell easily won his party’s nomination to return to the Senate.

With the early results, McConnell was receiving more than 85% of the Republican primary vote, while his nearest opponent was receiving just over 5%.   McConnell will be seeking a historic seventh term in November.

On the Democratic side, the outcome remains unclear and will likely not be decided before next week.    With early results, Amy McGrath held a 6,000 vote lead over Charles Booker of Louisville.

However, those early results did not include Jefferson County.  State election officials say it will be next week before final Jefferson county figures are tabulated.

WJRS NEWS will provide continuing election coverage throughout this week as results become official, if they do.   At the latest, join Jeff Hoover and Tony Kerr for primary election coverage here on WJRS
