It’s primary election day in Kentucky, but we may not know the results for several more days.
Due to changes in voting as a result of COVID-19, voters in Kentucky have been able to vote in person for more than two weeks now, and a record number of Kentuckians have taken advantage of the automatic eligibility to receive and vote with an absentee ballot. Kentucky voters will be electing their parties’ nominee for United States Senate.
On the Republican side, 6 term incumbent Mitch McConnell is expected to easily win his parties’ nomination for an unprecedented seventh term. The statewide race getting the most attention, not only in Kentucky but nationwide, is the race for the Democratic nomination for U. S. Senate and the chance to face McConnell in the fall. Democrats Amy McGrath and Charles Booker are in a tight race to win their nomination.
Locally, voters in Russell, Clinton, Cumberland and a portion of Pulaski counties will choose their next State Representative between Josh Branscum and Mark Polston. The winner will be unopposed in November.
Voters who have not yet voted in Russell County can still do so today, but they must vote at the Russell County Courthouse as no precincts are open due to COVID-19.
Ruth Hill, Deputy County Clerk, says no results will be available tonight. Any person voting by absentee ballot must have their ballot postmarked by midnight tonight, and as long as that ballot is received by Saturday, it will be counted. Hill says the county cannot publicly release any results until 6 p.m. on Monday.
WJRS News will have a brief primary election report tonight with Jeff Hoover and Tony Kerr beginning at 5:30, and then we will have a more detailed election night coverage next Monday night at 6 o’clock when county results from all four counties in the State Representative’s race are released and made public.
