Russell County School Board gives go-ahead to major athletic facilities upgrades

The Russell County Board of Education gave approval to move forward with a major athletic facilities upgrade at its meeting Monday night.

The plan, which comes with a price tag of around $7.65M, would create a new football field with turf surrounded by a new track which would also be used by the soccer program. The Laker band would also be able to use the new field and the current baseball field would receive new turf under the plan.

The plan opens a lot of doors, such as the ability to host district soccer tournaments, marching band competitions, and track meets, all of which Russell County has been unable to host due to inadequate facilities.

The board also plans to look into upgrades to the tennis courts as part of these athletic facilities upgrades.

The passage of HB 678 opens up more funding options for the school district to be able to renovate and upgrade athletic facilities.
