Third-ranked Lindsey Wilson men’s tennis dropped its season opener today with a 5-2 loss to NCAA foe Eastern Kentucky at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
Alonso Tellez and Colbi Ho produced the Lindsey Wilson wins today during singles play. Tellez won a three-set thriller at the second-seeded singles match while Ho won in straight sets at the fifth-seeded match.
Eastern Kentucky (1-2) claimed the doubles point — playing under NCAA rules — after sweeping all three doubles matches.
EKU’s Ramon van Flymen and Sebastian Mueller defeated the Blue Raiders’ top-seeded Tellez and Denis Porcic 6-2. Guillem Sanchis and Diego Asis matched the top match with a 6-2 win over Filip Persson and Javier Raya in the second-seeded match to secure the doubles point.
The Colonels completed doubles play as Parth Aggarwal and Dan Lineberry claimed a 6-4 win over Ivan Solans Diaz and Tomas Depiaggio in the third-seeded match.
Mueller posted the first singles point of the day in the third-seeded match, defeating Depiaggio 7-5, 6-3 to give EKU a 2-0. Sanchis pushed the team lead to 3-0 in the No. 4-seeded match with a 6-3, 7-5 over Solans Diaz.
Van Flymen provided the fourth and decisive point for EKU in the top-seeded match, outlasting Porcic 7-6, 1-6, 6-2.
The Blue Raiders claimed the next two points.
Tellez put Lindsey Wilson on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over Aggarwal. Tellez improves to 16-3 all-time at Lindsey Wilson in singles play with his win.
Ho followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over def. Lineberry to notch his first Lindsey Wilson win and trim the team deficit to 4-2.
Asis concluded the match with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Persson in the sixth-seeded match to give the Colonels the 5-2 win.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 4, as the Blue Raiders travel to Bellarmine (Ky.) in Louisville, Ky.
