Second Round of Severe Weather Moves Through Kentucky and Lake Cumberland Area

A second round of severe thunderstorms and tornados swept through the southern United States on Friday, affecting Kentucky and the Lake Cumberland Area for the second time in three days. The most severe weather that affected Russell and surrounding counties began in Metcalfe County Friday evening and continued to intensify as it moved into Adair, Russell, southern Casey and then into Pulaski County. A funnel cloud was spotted in northern Russell Springs, a touchdown has yet to be confirmed. No damage has been reported in Russell County, however, rescue and relief efforts are underway across the state and southern United States.

Aerial Photos of Tornado Damage

The National Weather Service visited northern Russell County Thursday morning to survey damage from Wednesday’s severe weather that affected numerous homes and buildings in the area. The NWS determined that an EF-2 tornado did in fact touch down in northern Russell County. The tornado was approximately 250 yards wide and traveled for four miles while on the ground.

Russell Springs Girl Wins Metcalfe Co. Pageant

A Russell Springs girl took top honors over the weekend in a state qualifying pageant in Metcalfe County. Mackenzie Bennett was crowned Petite Miss Pumpkin Festival Sunday in Edmonton. Mackenzie is the 7 yr old daugther of Adam Bennett and Christy Burton. Mackenzie will represent Metcalfe County in state competition in November. Upward Soccer Popular With Local Youth

More than 250 youngsters participate each Saturday in the Upward Soccer program at the Russell Springs First Baptist church. This past Saturday, the popular weekly sports program, “This Week in Laker Sports” which is heard each Saturday morning at 9 o’clock on ESPN Radio 1060, did a live broadcast from the Upward Soccer games. Russell County Library/Bank of Jamestown Coloring Contest Winners Announced

The Russell County Public Library recently held its annual coloring contest, sponsored by the Bank of Jamestown. Pictured are some of the winners along with Patti Lamb, representing the Bank of Jamestown and Fillamay Cowell of the Russell County Library. The winners are as follows: 3-5 years old, 1st-Rachel Webb, 2nd-Jasmine Hernandez, 3rd-Josiah Branscum. 6-8 years old, 1st-Elizabeth Flatt, 2nd-Daniell Blevins, 3rd-Enrique Clark. 9+ years old, 1st-Stephanie Morales, 2nd-Randa Ballanger, 3rd-Dalton Potter.

Josh Melson Wins Back-To-School Prize Package

It’s the time of year again where the beach balls are put up and the schoolbooks are dragged out. To make going back to school a little more enjoyable for the students of Russell County Schools, Laker Country, 104.9 fm, WJRS gave one student a prize package of items that included a $50 certificate to Dutton’s Shoe Source, a $100 certificate to Thomas Sports Apparel for Laker items, numerous coupons to local fast food businesses, seasons sports passes and custom embroidery from Itchin’ To Stitch. Also given away was a check for $104.90 from Laker Country, 104.9 fm, WJRS.

The students were required to call in to our studios during regular business hours and provide their name and school information. With over 300 calls from students, ranging from Kindergarten to local seniors at RCHS, the prize package was given away Tuesday morning in anticipation of the first day of classes.

The winner of the “Back to School” Prize Package Giveaway was Josh Melson, an 8^th grader at Russell County Middle School. Josh and his friends returned to school today with the rest of the Russell County School District for the first day of the 2011-2012 school year.

NEW RUSSELL COUNTY JUDICIAL CENTER SET TO OPEN AFTER LABOR DAY

The brand new, state-of-the-art facility that is the Russell County Judicial Center is on track to open for business the week after Labor Day, says Circuit Court Clerk Tony Kerr.

The 44,000 square foot building will house the offices of the Circuit Court Clerk and staff, the courtrooms for district and circuit court, as well as the Judges offices and their own staff, and other related offices that currently do not have their own space in the Russell County Courthouse building. The 160-room building will provide a safe environment for all judicial officials and staff, inmates and public who are required to be in the building for court dates, meetings, and business. With the ultimate goal of safety in the new Judicial Center, accommodations include three separate elevator systems, one each for judges, the public, and inmates, as well as secured parking for officials and private cells for inmates who have court dates. A security team will also be in place inside the courthouse, with access to top of the line security equipment and cameras.

While the Judicial Center will be open for business after Labor Day, a grand opening event and dedication ceremony is scheduled for the end of September although no official date has been set.
