An 8th grader at the Russell County Middle School was killed in a single vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon. Russell County Coroner Larry Skaggs told WJRS NEWS 13 year old Matthew Landon Meredith died at the scene of the crash on Ky. 1680 (Pleasant Hill Road), just over one mile from the intersection of Ky. 619 (Bernard Ridge Road). Coroner Skaggs said Meredith was the lone passenger in a car being driven by his step-brother, Jesus’ Martinez, age 17, also of Jamestown. After the vehicle left the roadway, it struck a tree, with the passenger side of the vehicle sustaining the impact. Martinez, a Senior at Russell County High, was transported by ambulance to the Russell County Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Russell County Schools Superintendent Michael Ford told WJRS NEWS the district’s “Crisis Intervention Team” met at length Wednesday evening along with members of the Green River Crisis Response Team in preparation of providing grief counseling and various forms of support for students and staff Thursday at the Russell County Middle School & Russell County High School. Additionally, members of the middle school football team’s coaching staff took part in the “Crisis Intervention Team” session Wednesday evening to better prepare for providing counseling and assistance for Matt Meredith’s teammates.
