Russell County Schools Superintendent Kenny Pickett is retiring June 30th.
Pickett announced his decision to retire near the end of Monday night’s regular monthly meeting of the Russell County Board of Education. In a prepared statement to the School Board and those in attendance, Pickett said he has mostly enjoyed working in various positions within the local school district over the past 31 years….but also said some of the most difficult days of his life occurred while being Superintendent, specifically referring to a period last fall when he had to lay-off nearly two dozen employees because of the school system’s “dire financial situation” at that time.
Pickett also said “gossip and untruths” had negatively impacted the school district, as well as members of his family, and had a bearing on his decision.
The Superintendent praised the school district’s educators and staff for their daily efforts in providing quality education throughout the county’s school system.
