Occupational Tax Being Lowered, Individual Cap Increasing

It appears Russell County taxpayers soon will get a little relief in the amount they pay toward the county’s occupational tax.

Monday night during its regular monthly session, after some 30 minutes of discussion, the Fiscal Court heard the first reading of an ordinance to amend the county’s 1% payroll tax to three-quarters of 1%.

The amendment also calls for increasing the “individual cap” from $800 to $2,500 and will “keep in place” the two-year Sunset Clause which will force the tax to be re-visited again in April 2015.

The changes aren’t official as the “amended ordinance” must be published in The Times Journal followed by a second reading then an official vote by the Fiscal Court.

But based on comments made by each magistrate last night, lowering the payroll tax to three-quarters of 1% seems certain.  That second reading is expected to take place in March with the lowering of the tax becoming effective April 1st.
