The regular monthly meeting of the Jamestown City Council was held Thursday evening. The meeting lasted about 20 minutes and was rather uneventful with only one official vote taken which was to approve the minutes of the July meeting. Mayor Brooks Bates summarized for the Council recent meetings of the city’s cemetery board and park board.
According to the Mayor, the cemetery board is going to move forward with selling a large lot between the Jamestown Court Motel and the former Wilkerson’s Do-It Center building. That lot was purchased many years ago for $50,000 with plans of expanding the cemetery toward North Main Street. Sometime after that purchase, the cemetery board negotiated the purchase of just over 7 acres of land from the Buck and Margaret Pruitt heirs which connects to the northwestern most part of the cemetery. Purchasing the Pruitt property negated the need for the property closer to Main Street.
The city park board met recently and a request was made to name the largest ball-field at the city park the “Walter Bell Field”. Bell, who died last year, coordinated softball leagues and tournaments for many years on that field. There was also some discussion about the need to re-stripe the tennis courts and volleyball court at the city park and a plaque will soon be erected designating the newly remodeled basketball court as “Cody’s Court” in memory of Cody Wilson. The new, modern basketball goals were purchased with monies donated in honor of Wilson after his death in October of 2008.
