The Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency won the 2nd Place trophy for greatest volunteer participation by a non-profit organization during the 2010 PRIDE Spring Cleanup, which was held in April in 38 counties of southern and eastern Kentucky. The Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency recruited 621 Spring Cleanup volunteers, including Lake Cumberland Head Start students. The non-profit agency operates a variety of programs, such as the Lake Cumberland Head Start, to eliminate the causes and conditions of poverty in the 10-county Lake Cumberland area.
“I want to congratulate you on such a successful local effort, and I thank you for helping us set a region-wide record for volunteers,” said Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-5), who co-founded PRIDE. “
31,239 volunteers took part in the 2010 PRIDE Spring Cleanup, our greatest participation since we started the Spring Cleanup in 1998.”
Region-wide, the 2010 PRIDE Spring Cleanup netted 34,098 bags of trash, 7,834 old tires, 1,908 junk appliances, and 130,400 pounds of recyclable materials. During the PRIDE Spring Cleanup, local PRIDE Coordinators organized cleanup activities and recruited volunteers to pick up litter. PRIDE supplied free T-shirts and cleanup supplies for the volunteers, and PRIDE awarded $587,500 to cities and counties to help pay for disposing of roadside litter, removing illegal dumps, and offering free trash-disposal events.
The 2010 PRIDE Spring Cleanup was sponsored by Wal-Mart, Outdoor Venture Corporation, and SouthEast Telephone.
“I encourage you to try for another trophy during Roadside PRIDE Month in October,” Rogers added. “By volunteering together to pick up roadside litter, you can win a trophy and, more importantly, make sure our roads are clean when the fall colors are so beautiful.”
PRIDE is a non-profit organization that promotes “Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment” in southern and eastern Kentucky. It was founded in 1997 by Rogers and the late James E. Bickford, who was the Kentucky Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.
