Jamestown Receives Award For New Water Treatment Plant; Adds Two Vehicles To Fire Department Fleet

The City of Jamestown and its engineering firm, Ken-Virons Engineering of Lexington, has received an award for its new water treatment plant.  Mayor Brooks Bates made the announcement during Thursday night’s regular monthly meeting of the Jamestown City Council.  Bates said the award was for innovation and efficiency and was presented during ceremonies held at the Frankfort Country Club on March 10th.  Mayor Bates, Public Works Director Ottis Skaggs and representatives of Ken-Virons attended the event.  The new water treatment plant went on-line last year and is capable of producing some 6 million gallons of water daily.

In other business at Thursday night’s Jamestown City Council meeting:

  • city leaders accepted a bid from Lawhorn Ford in Russell Springs for a new, full-size, extended cab truck for the Jamestown Fire Department.  Lawhorn’s winning bid was $39,491.64 which was $674.36 lower than a bid received from Franklin Motors.
  • After hearing from Jeff Landers, Assistant Chief of the Jamestown Fire Department, the City Council agreed to purchase a 1982 model pumper truck to replace the department’s 1970 pumper for $8,000.  According to Landers, the older pumper is leaking water and needs other repairs.  The truck being purchased is mechanically sound and can pump 1,500 gallons of water per minute which is 500  more than the department’s older pumper.  The replacement pumper, although used, has 73,000 miles on its diesel engine and the pump has only been used 168 hours.  The City Council approved the $8,000 purchase on the condition that the truck’s pumping capabilities are “certified” and “meet state regulations”.
  • the Jamestown Council accepted a bid from Morgan Sanitation to take over the city’s garbage pick-up business.  Out-sourcing to Morgan’s will not result in rate increases or loss of jobs for city employees according to Mayor Bates.
