The Jamestown City Council held its monthly business meeting Thursday evening.  Five members of the Russell County High School Student YMCA, or “Y-Club”, attended the meeting and discussed the Kentucky Y-Corp Service Trip they will take part in this summer.  From June 13th through 20th, teens from across the state will travel together performing acts of community service and learning about Kentucky’s culture.  Past Y-Corp trips have worked with children at Big Brothers and Big Sisters organizations, painted and repaired YMCA Community buildings and worked with conservation of Kentucky’s natural forests.  In 2007, on the first Y-Corp trip, the group stopped in Russell County for a day of work at the KOA Campgrounds and to clean along the shores of Lake Cumberland.  In order for the five Russell County High School students to participate in the week-long trip, they must collectively raise $2,500 through fundraisers, donations, and sponsors, and will also be required to participate in and account for 250 service hours.  After their presentation which included video highlights from last summer’s Y-Corp service trip, the Council unanimously voted to donate $500 toward the student’s service trip this June.

In other matters at Thursday night’s City Council meeting in Jamestown:

  • Brief discussion was held regarding possible adjustments to prices for persons or businesses experiencing water leaks.  No action was taken.  The Council was in agreement to hear a proposal from Mayor Brooks Bates during next month’s meeting on the issue.
  • The City will be advertising for bids for private garbage collection.  Currently the City provides garbage pick-up for more than 450 households.  If the City moves forward with this plan, billing would still be handled through City Hall with no increase in current rates.
  • The City Council agreed to solicit bids for a new pickup truck for the Jamestown Fire Department.  The vehicle would be used by Jamestown Firefighters for transporting equipment and for travel to and from mandatory training as needed.
